Paul Hiles

My Irish Grandfather was my first and greatest inspiration. As a child I watched him paint in his flat near London Bridge. The smell of linseed oil and white spirit still remind me of those days in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

After an Art Foundation at Watford School of Art and completing a degree in Fine Art at Birmingham School of Art, I worked as a screen printer for two years to save enough money to study and live in Southern Spain. I studied Spanish at Malaga University from 1989 to 1990, near Picasso’s birthplace in the City Centre. I painted landscapes in Ronda and Andalusia since the early 1980s. Ronda was home to the great David Bomberg, who continues to inspire me to this day.

I have worked at the National Gallery and The Royal Academy of Arts,
I have also taught art and design to students in Sunderland and Hertfordshire. I am passionate about art and creativity.

In the last 10 years I have been concentrating on my oblique cityscapes of London. I use photographs in combination with street level observations, sketches and notes to create my unique pencil drawings. I aim to create an immediacy and accessibility within my work. Each individual project would typically take up to and over a year to complete. As a proud Londoner I show aspects of my home city from vertiginous vantage points and adding some fluent imagination to make each composition work.

The finished pencil drawings are large-scale panoramic pieces, with hints of colour, usually double-decker buses, and punctuated with personal interests and references. I have limited and unlimited prints made on quality paper by Todd-White, high-end art photographers based in London, which allows me to share my work with a wider audience.

I had a major exhibition at Victoria Station, London, stretching over 3 days set up on the concourse in 2016. It was a huge success with many people coming off or waiting for trains seeing and buying my work. I also managed to raise a sizable amount of money, with a percentage of each sale going to a cancer charity, in collaboration with Macmillan.

I receive regular commission work and would be open to discussing any project, particularly offering my interests and unique take on city and townscapes, including and beyond London.
